What is the Countryside Information System (CIS)?
The Countryside Information System (CIS) is a Microsoft Windows-based
program developed to give policy advisers, planners and researchers
easy access to spatial information about the British countryside.
CIS contains a wide range of environmental data - including landscape
features, vegetation habitats and topography for each one kilometre square
of Great Britain.
|
As part of the CIS, the Data Catalogue provides information that
enables users to identify and obtain available datasets and a forum for data
suppliers to promote their datasets.
The development of the Countryside Information System was funded by Defra and
the software is supported by ADAS under contract to Defra.
CIS data originates from a variety of sources the including the
Countryside Survey and Magic. The National Biodiversity
Network also provides a tool that allows its data to be exported to a text file in a suitable
format to be loaded into the Countryside Information System, download this file here
To get maximum benefit from the CIS new users should spend some familiarising themselves with the system. A series of tutorials and exercises have been designed and set up to do this <>
